The Longest Scarf
Spring 2025
Inter-American Magnet High School, K-4 Unit Lesson
What can you EXPRESS with LINES? Students will observe how lines and patterns are used in the children’s book The Looongest Scarf, by Vivian Wu.
Day 1: Students categorize different kinds of lines: dotted, wavy, zig-zag, or dashed lines, and reflect on how lines are used to represent and express various aspects of their lives. Students will answer icebreaker questions by repeating expressive lines across a paper to make patterns. At the end of the class, all segments can be connected to make a giant scarf to create the looongest scarf within their classroom!
Day 2-3:After reviewing the scarf from The Looongest Scarf, students will learn how to paper weave and apply their knowledge of lines and patterns. Students will be able to reflect on how art can be used and made for different purposes, building on their weaving and turning it into a work of drawing, painting, collage, or sculpture.
Class 4-5With their knowledge of weaving, lines, and patterns, students will refer back to The Looongest Scarf, and think about the food they want to bring to their classroom picnic! Students will apply lines and patterns to decorate their paper plates, and weave their paper plate picnic foods using a variety of materials, including yarn and colored tissue paper. Students will organize a display of their picnic using a picnic blanket.
